This Initiative was started by Kelly Grevler in February 2013.

Sidewalk Sessions are free guitar lessons for young children in the community of Downtown Johannesburg. Each Sunday between 4 and 25 young children show up for guitar lessons. They sit and learn their instrument on the sidewalk, on small chairs on the corner of Fox and Kruger Street in the Maboneng Precinct Johannesburg South Africa.

The motive behind Sidewalk Sessions is simple: Music is a universal language that Grevler believes connects people despite age or race. It is nothing more than a way to give back to this vibrant and developing community. By teaching young children to play guitar it gives them a sense of empowerment and confidence. It teaches them patience and discipline. They are encouraged that they can be and do anything they want, with a strong sense of support from their fellow students.
